Being Steve Nash: 07-08 Phoenix Suns Preview

The end to last season sucked. (As I type this the Sp*rs are getting their rings.) We've heard plenty of whining, complaining, conspiracy theories and trade rumors to try and cope with that fact. The new season is here.

We've taken time this summer to look at how the returning players on our favorite team could improve this summer. Amare wants revenge, Marcus Banks wants playing time, Shawn Marion wants $60 million dollars, the front office wants to stay away from the luxury tax. What does Steve Nash want? He wants a ring.

Last season's Steve Nash was the culmination of two years of hype and his rise into the NBA upper crust. Nash is now a guy people will pay to see play. Nash played with an edge last season and his focus on winning a title produced some great basketball. However but we've read comments from Coach D'Antoni that the team was too stressed out by expectations and it hurt their chemistry late in the year before all the drama of the Sp*rs series.

So what can we expect from the NBA's best teammate this year? How can Nash improve? What can he do to bring the Finals and the chance at the trophy back to PHX? Make it work.

Suns fans aren't the only people interested in Nash. He's been on magazine covers, interviewed by Charlie Rose, profiled in the NY Times and had a major charity event in China with Yao Ming. Steve Nash the conscious celebrity has been busy but what about the baller.

Nash is a true point guard so his teammates, their psyches and skill sets are all part of his success. Guys need to be ready to play when Nash is on the court. Looking at the roster, I can't help but be excited for the season.

The Suns kept their core intact and that feat alone may prove to be more significant than the seemingly bad trades made by newbie GM Steve Kerr. The roster the Suns will put on the floor opening night will be small and probably more suited to Coach D'Antoni's style than any other roster he has had. Nash has plenty of weapons.

Amare Stoudemire is a legit MVP candidate. Perhaps he will make the step defensively to being a truly dominant player but he'll need the easy shots Nash creates to save some energy for defense.

Adding Grant Hill does make the Suns a better team. His skill set even after the injuries fits perfect in this system and his character only serves to amplify the vibe Nash has tried to use to lead this team.

Shawn Marion does not owe his career to Steve Nash. He has been fortunate however to have played with Jason Kidd, Stephon Marbury and now Nash. Marion makes the point guards look good with his finishing ability and he does the dirty work to keep the team successful. Nash keeps Marion on Sportscenter.

Boris Diaw has reported to camp in shape and with some aggressiveness. This is a welcome change after Nash was very obvious and pointed with criticism of Diaw's timid play last season. Coach D'Antoni shuffled Boris in the lineup but never criticized him. He'll need to bring a solid effort in his reserve role which will require playmaking and banging with bigs.

Leandro Barbosa seems ready for a bust out year or perhaps some regression as injuries seem to be mounting for the speedster. I'd expect a slow start and furious finish from LB.

Raja Bell has continued his rise to stardom and hopefully has recovered from off season knee surgery. His defense and shooting are invaluable against the dynamic wing players.

Last year's bench busts Sean Marks and Marcus Banks had some impressive moments in the preseason and perhaps might nab some minutes in the regular rotation. Marks will compete with newcomer Brian Skinner for the big man minutes.

The team has rookies for the first time in a while and DJ Strawberry looked very impressive from all accounts in the preseason. Alando Tucker may not be ready for prime time just yet but hopefully he'll be a player that D'Antoni develops.

So that's the roster, what do I think about the season? Here's what I know:

1. The season is too long. Adding in the the international tuneups for the Olympics, players are playing basketball year round and will be forced to pick their spots during the season. The Suns have three key players who played this summer.

2. The West is as brutal as ever. The Mavs will be just as fired up as the Suns feeling their best chance at a title ended prematurely. The Spurs have everything in place to attempt to repeat, except Tim Donaghy. The Rockets added a new coach and good players. The Nuggets are (somewhat) healthy and have Iverson for a full season. Even the bad teams have promising rookies who may spark an upset or two.

3. The East is actually League Pass worthy. The Celtics will be fun to watch, especially when the inevitable fight with the Knicks breaks out. All the good teams in the East have major flaws which may make for entertaining basketball and a competitive regular season. But we still want Atlanta to suck because we get their pick regardless next summer. OJ Mayo or Michael Beasley in a Suns uniform would be nice.

Here's what I don't know:
1. 60 wins seems like fools gold. The sheer number of shit teams makes for plenty of easy nights. But the push for homecourt advantage or the rhythm of winning streaks makes for plenty of nights where guys don't want to give an inch. There will be plenty of times this season where Coach D'Antoni will have to make the choice to let a few games go or go a little bit longer with the rookies. What impact will it have on the win total?

2. Is Marion really all that unhappy? Two thoughts. 1, there are plenty of third bananas who piled up rings. James Worthy, Horace Grant, Robert Parish, the list goes on. Who cares how much credit you get if you have a legit chance to win? 2, Marion plays well with a chip on his shoulder and he might have to carry the Suns to a title if he thinks he's worth $20 million. Marion will be fine. It'll be a shame to see him go next summer. Gilbert Arenas will look good in purple though.

3. Is Grant Hill the missing piece? Part of me has flashbacks to the Sprite commercials (He's a Cowboy), the dunks and even the Duke highlights and I hope he gets the Gary Payton championship. Sure he's a little worn down but he'll make plays and even win a game or two himself. The other part of me thinks about his injury history and I want him to travel everywhere by Segway and hope that D'Antoni sits him during back to backs. More than anything, he's the slasher and midrange player the Suns have been missing. This might be the most complete offensive team we'll ever see play. The overhyped D'Antoni "style" (you know passing and shooting when open) may breakthrough because no defense can account for all the options.

The Suns are a year older and have learned from being at the center of controversy during probably the worst NBA season ever (unless you count 1999 when the Sp*rs won the lockout title). They have a chip and it will translate into playoff success. The Sp*rs are just a year older. They are a target than can be beaten and that will be beaten without the aid of 1990's rules or crooked referees.

While the whispers about Amare being 2005 good, Grant Hill being 1995 good and Marion being a distraction may be season-long storylines- most of the focus will be on Nash. He's the NBA's best leader and while this group is very talented, they'll need some guidance, great performances and good chemistry to win it all.

The playoffs are a loooooong way away though. Personally I'd much rather see a 10 man rotation, starters minutes in the low 30s and a bench who stretches leads more than 60+ wins. (Both would nice though.) How the Suns approach the regular season will be a major part of their overall success this year. It's time to run.

I think your preview may very well be better than mine.

Love the Suns but love the Spurs too... generally like your ananlysis, but the Spurs bashing is overdone-the Suns had a good shot; diaw and amare got off the bench in reaction to a flagrant foul that Nash probably milked and they were harshly suspended; the suns had a chance to win game 6 and take the series to game 7; even assuming they beat the Spurs, the Suns winning a championship wasn't guaranteed i.e. possibility of injury ... the Suns got a tough break, but it happens so everyone needs to suck it up and stop crying about it still...whew, just felt that needed to be said.

As for the preview, Amare will never be MVP b/c although a great player, he does not carry a team or make those around him better; he's just too selfish; who knows though, Amare's need for "revenge" might be the motivation he needs to go to another level.

The reason Game 6 was unwinnable was because Phoenix was intentionally shorthanded, regardless of the big start, the lack of a full team allowed the Spurs to win the game, so anon, don't throw that "the suns had a chance to win game 6" bullshit. Phoenix was already worn out by halftime with the lead!
And its one thing to fall down intentionally, but to intentionally throw yourself on the sideline stop with a bad back? Nash isn't stupid to do that to himself for a foul. So don't make it like he was flopping, this comming from someone who likes a team which can bitch and moan in three different languages. Enjoy your guys' ring, but know that no one in this nation cares, just look at the TV ratings after Phoenix and Golden State were eliminated.
Hershey, well said. Its time to put the past in the ugly drawer, redeem ourselves, and have fun!

Anon 2:

No one said Steve flopped-he was obviously flagrantly fouled but like many players, it's likely that he exagerrated the foul/his reaction (how much is up for debate) to ensure the refs attention to the severity of the foul.

The weariness of the Suns in game 6 is also understandable, but the Suns and Coach D bear some blame as well i.e. short rotation/heavy reliance on Nash.

I don't think "bitching and moaning" in different languages is really relevant since all teams annoyingly complain (in various languages) and the Suns are no exception. (the degree is up for debate with each die hard swearing they don't do it as much and others always do)
--> 1 ex. continuing to bring up Horry's flagrant foul and the NBA's Decision to suspend Amare and Boris as the Reason that the Suns didn't Win a championship.

--> there are no guarantees the Suns would have won even if they beat the Spurs; there never are and acting like a likelihood is a certainty isn't going to change that

Ratings and what the nation thinks shouldn't be what a team that cares about winning a championship should care so much about; the team's fans or casual fans seemingly care about ratings etc, but I don't think Nash would prefer them to a Ring.

Like I said, I like Both the Suns/Spurs and want the focus back on basketball and each of the team's great chance to win this year like every year. It's the bitterness/blame that keeps getting thrown around that is a factor that prevents a completely fresh start. The Suns are a great org. with with talented players on a fun team to watch, but the Spurs are also a great org. and one player's actions do Not define an org. or the other players/talent who some fans who aren't even from Texas can also appreciate.

However, each fan is entitled to their biases, so I can understand some fans' pov to an extent.

I'd thank everyone to keep it civil. Not discouraging debate, mind you, it keeps the mind sharp... but civility is always nice.

That said: I try not to get caught up in any of the stuff that happened. I can understand how some people would, I can understand how some people are critical of the people who do. There's nothing we can do about it now except speculate, and my feelings on the subject are that, this year, the Suns are going to win it all. (Like every other year! Hasn't worked out as planned quite yet.) All I know is that looking back on what-ifs and could-have-beens is the easiest way to get bitter.

Then again, I'm rarely one to get upset about much anything, so feel free to take that with a grain of salt.

My fault for being a little too flip with the comments about last season. Keep in mind, I live in Texas and trash talk about the Suns and Spurs is part of my daily.

This is a fan site so I tend to joke around but it may not come off as a joke. People took the Spurs stuff kinda seriously but nobody thinks twice about me saying the Suns should sign Gilbert Arenas?

The Spurs won the title fair and square but a crooked ref and the suspensions ruined a great series and our season. It sucked. Joking about it is how I deal with it. Let's move on.

This year I think we'll beat out everyone (including the Spurs). Because we have the best team and I think it's about time we catch a break. I am biased because I'm a fan and this is time for optimism.

I like the discussion but like Zei (who's preview is excellent) said let's stay cool in the comments because I'd hate this to turn into the AZRep or ESPN comment sections. Those sites get nasty.

I love the fact that fans of other teams comment here. It was great during the playoffs when Lakers and Spurs fans were on here with smart comments and some trash talk.

This should be a good year on the blog because me and Zei will be here all season and I hope to have some fresh t-shirt designs up for you guys soon.

Anon 1,

I've come off as an Amare doubter in the past but I'm thinking I might be wrong. When I look at where he is entering year six without having played college ball, I think he's right there in terms of proven ability, with no ceiling for improvement. Compare him with Duncan who played 4 years of college ball and won in year 2 (lockout title) with a veteran team. I think over time Amare may prove to be just as successful.

Kurt Thomas was his training wheels to a certain extent. The team traded for KT partially at Amare's request. The time is now for him to take the next step as a player. I'm committing to Amare as a legit 1st team All NBA guy. I'm a little uneasy but I feel the guy is about to really blowup.

Hersey, you're a good sport for not saying anything about this goofball Anon #2 calling you "Hershey."

I still say I am annoyed with Amare Stoudemire. You know, if KT was his training wheels, then the training wheels don't appear to have helped. KT's example didn't turn Stoudemire into a good defender last season, though I suppose it could take longer. He doesn't need to score more points, he needs to shut more opponents down.

Has anyone seen the already-discredited rumor saying the Suns would be interested in joining a three-way Kobe Bryant trade with the Bulls that would net Tyrus Thomas? It's ridiculous on its face, because Thomas seems mostly just a raw athlete *and* has been called a headcase.

Oh, and I can get over the San Antonio Squirts' thuggishness easily enough, but I think the Suns were wrong to get over it themselves. Why not use it as motivation? Come on, Suns, get mad!

At 1:01 PM, Blogger Hersey said...

You don't really know the effectiveness of training wheels until they are gone. With KT, Amare improved as a help side defender but still struggled with his cheap fouls and positioning. There's a great piece in the AZ Rep today about his defensive mechanics. He's got 82 games to work on it and shows us and the league some real improvement. Ego, ability and accountability can produce some fine results. I think he can do it.

At 2:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't like the Spurs but I respect them. They're a tight organization business-wise and the Suns could learn a thing or two from them. You gotta admit they've got a keen eye for talent. (ie Ginobli)

There might be some hope for Amare's defence and that's the fact that if he doesn't improve, he'll get in foul troble and have to sit on the bench. That should provide motivation.

I'm worried that Atlanta might not completely suck this year. Horford looks like he'll be pretty good.

At 2:28 PM, Blogger Zei_Zao_LS said...

Atlanta should, honestly, be high in the lottery at very best. We missed out on the chance for a great pick, and now I think we'll be lucky to get in the 10-14 range. That said... we could get a good player in that range. The problem would be if the Hawks got into the playoffs.

I mean, the difference between getting, say, Jerryd Bayless and, say, Ante Tomic. (Though I do like the game of Serge Ibaka, who could fall into the 20's, depending on various factors.)

I'm just saying...

At 11:03 AM, Blogger Joshua said...

Hersey, what was so bad about last season, other than the Nuggets-Knicks fight? If it were just that, the 2004-05 season would be the worst ever because of the Ron Artest fight.

And you say all the good East teams have major flaws? What's the Bulls' flaw--Ben Wallace's lack of offense?

If the Seattle game tonight weren't the beginning of the season, I think it would bore me, because preseason aside, only through sheer unexpected incompetence could they lose to the Sonics, whether Kevin Durant is there or not.

Hey zei_zao_Is - What do you prefer to be called? Mr. Zao?

I agree, the Atlanta pick is likely to be in the middle of the first round. I think we'll be lucky if it's in the lottery. But, the Joe Johnson trade was still a brilliant one. The Suns were in the perfect position last year to get a very high pick in a very deep draft. They simply got unlucky. No fault there. If they had gotten Atlanta's pick last year, the trade would have been one of the best ever. Anyway . . .

It's time to lace them up. Let's get ready to run!

ZZ, Zei, Blake, whatever you want. I'm not picky.

Joshua: I think he's referring to the fact that the entire east sucked, the team he hates the most won the championship, beating the Suns in the process, and generally very little happened in the regular season.

I personally thought it was a great season. Gilbert Arenas, the Suns and Mavs going off for crazy good win streaks, the Warriors knocking the Mavs off in the first round, Leandro established himself as a very good player in the league, Baron Davis finally managed to get back to his old form, if only for a bit...

All in all, a rather interesting season, it just didn't end the way I wanted.

I guess I'd say I also hate the Squirts the most, but only right now. Until about 2003, my hatred of the Lakers approached the psychotic. I almost permanently quit following the NBA in 2002 because I was so sickened at their arrogance being rewarded; after every championship I could only think, "So, another huge victory for the bad guys." Even Bickley called them the "evil empire." When the Spurs won a title in '03, I didn't mind, because we had no reason to hate them; and if I'd even cared about the Finals in 2004, I would have been delighted to see the hard-working Pistons humiliate the Fakers. Most of all, the 2005-06 first round is arguably my favorite Suns playoff series *ever*; I probably enjoyed it more than the '93 finals, "The Shot" by Rex Chapman, or Gam3 4 of 2003 Round 1, when Jake Voskuhl made a game-winning hook/. The night of that first do-or-die game the Suns won, I was in a motel in Libertyville, Illinois, waiting to get up at 6 AM the next morning; I stayed up half the night anyway to see the end of the game, and didn't mind that my family were annoyed at my keeping them awake. Best ending ever: the Lakers squashed like the bugs they are.

Briefly, the reason I thought last season was so awful was because I watched a ton of basketball. Because I lived in Tucson, I had to get league pass to watch the Suns games. NBA rules mandate that 150 miles of a team's city are considered it's home area. However Tucson had no local carrier for Suns games- thus I had to shell out for league pass.

I just deleted a long list of gripes but Zei pretty much nailed it. The injuries and still unsolved playoff seeding issues just killed the playoffs and the fans were left hanging wanting to watch good basketball and being denied by an outdated commissioner. Stern will change a basketball without union approval but won't reseed the playoffs.

I've worked in the NFL and they get it right where the NBA gets it wrong. The season should peak in the playoffs not in March when PHX plays Dallas. I love the Suns but I'm luke warm on the league after last year. I could write a very lengthy article on this subject but I'll save it until after the Superbowl when national coverage starts.
