A little...No, very concerned
The Suns have faced several good teams lately and the tougher competition has given fans and NBA heads a better idea of how good this team actually is. Uneven efforts are going to be there early in the season and teams lose some games they shouldn't lose- that's acceptable. What becoming clearer, the more I listen to Jeff Van Gundy critique the team while they lose on national TV- this team is not as good as last year.

The same can be said for several teams who have awful records (Miami, Chicago) but the Suns' record is good but their play is frustratingly inconsistent. They beat Utah at home, then can't convert in the clutch against New Orleans. They play great defense and get clutch buckets against the Spurs and then spot Dallas 37 points in the 1st quarter of a game they lose by three. They get a balanced effort against Toronto then get worked by the Lakers, who are a better team at this point.
The team just isn't putting together a solid 48 minutes. A major reason (beside starters admittedly not playing hard, poor chemistry and injuries) is the awful bench play. Some games the bench is weakened by LB starting due to Raja's mounting injury issues. Overall though, the bench rarely builds a lead and often treads water until Nash returns to the game- especially against good teams. Similar to football, the formula for success isn't just star players it's an abundance of capable role players. When Coach D'Antoni turns to the bench he gets points from Barbosa, rebounds and blocks from SKinner and whatever from Diaw. In the West, all the teams are deep and right now it looks like the Suns don't have enough versatility for the tougher match-ups.
Watching the team play, it seems they are revealing who they really are after a East-heavy start. The team feasted on the East last year as well but their 12-2 record against the East is the bulk of the "elite" record at this point. In many games the team is playing to the level of the competition and failing to bring consistent energy on defense. Meanwhile, Golden State plays small ball better than PHX and with more athleticism. The Lakers have a stellar bench that scores and defends in relief of Kobe. Just looking at these teams within the division who've handled the Suns to this point is cause for concern. It's becoming obvious it's time for a trade.
They have to bolster their bench or at least give some guys minutes to earn their money. I too have begun to feel as dumbfounded as other fans who don't get how a team can make moves to save money yet play the shortest rotation in the league. Either stop wasting money on practice players or make a move to get some help. Marcus Banks either needs to play or be bought out. Watching Boris Diaw go through the motions makes me sick considering he makes more than players like Marcus Camby and Hedo Turkoglu and about the same as Tayshaun Prince. LB continues to be a great scorer but he isn't a point guard and the 2nd unit offense just stagnates when his shot is off.
Of course with a team over the luxury tax, it's easier said than done but it's obvious on the court that this team is missing something. The team only plays defense when they're down 10 or more. The Suns nastiness seems to primarily reside with Raja Bell. After watching the Lakers highlight reel on Christmas day- the team should be embarrassed with their defense. This is no longer the powerhouse team that came into your arena, lit you up and rolled out with a win. The Suns have a bulls-eye on their back but now they often fold after taking a team's best shot.
I think at this point a personnel move is the way to go. Their role players have bad contracts but they do have a bargaining chip in Atlanta's draft pick. Even if it's a backup point who can actually run an uptempo team and create shots or another shooter, something has to be done because the gap has been closed in the division and the conference. The Suns weaknesses will not go away without a roster move. I'm optimistic the team can improve internally but it will require a far more consistent effort than they've put forth in recent weeks. No matter how good Coach D'Antoni says they are- pathetic defensive efforts like the one against LA are fuel for his critics and proof this roster can't seriously challenge for a title.

I don't think a backup point guard is going to solve the Suns' problems, as long as opponent big men are looking to play the Suns and have their career nights against them. Jefferson, Bosh, Duncan and now Bynum... sorry, TD's 38 and 22 wasn't a career night for him, it was just about his average against the Suns, I'm afraid...
As for the bench, there's no way to know how terrible it is, since the Coach won't let most of the bench guys play at all. Is Banks really that awful? Last season, at least we knew he was; now we are left to guess. And what about DJ?
I'm am so upset with the Suns and Mike D'Antoni...it's the same thing as always...WE NEED SOME BIGS..look the whole experiment with Stat at the five full-time needs to end make a trade for somebody already and why the heck did they let Steven Hunter go a couple years ago...they ought to try to get him back..shoot Brad Miller or somebody...ANYBODY...We coulda locked JJ up for the same thing they paying Diaw if they would have went ahead and gae him an extention...coulda had Loul Deng then we would have some firepower off the bench....shoot only good thing we have done in the draft lately was Stoudemire and now I wish they would have sent him packing for KG...I mean do they really want to win a TITLE..get a real coach that will utilize the bench, even the showtime Lakers had 2 or 3 guys off the bench that were go getters...
I think that the problem with the Suns over the last few years is that they're afraid to add bigmen or post players or even guys who are just solid defenders because they're worried about how that will work with their Nash-centric, run-n-gun offense. I don't think the style that the Suns have played for the last few years is one that can win titles because inevitably a team that just runs and shoots threes will have to face a team like the Spurs who can go to their post game in the halfcourt and control the tempo.
Who could the Suns get to defend guys like Duncan and Bynum who wouldn't totally disrupt the offensive scheme D'Antoni has the team running? For instance, just say for the sake of argument, if Dwight Howard was on the team, the Suns would have to abandon the whole running-n-gunning thing, and Nash would no longer be able to just probe into the paint the way he does because with a presence like Howard on your team, you want to leave things open on the inside and you want to pound it down low, not run all over the court. Granted, if you could just add Dwight Howard to the Suns without giving anyone up it's a problem that would be easily offset by the insane dominance that would result, but a player like him can't be had probably for anyone, or even if he could he would require giving up major pieces to procure.
I think the Suns don't have a quick fix that a trade can remedy, and instead need a full overhaul and re-examination of the way they play. I'm just not convinced that playing basketball with a style centered around what Steve Nash creates out there will ever win a title. No other team has ever won a championship playing that way. Even the Showtime Lakers had one of the best post players of all time, Kareem, anchoring their running game, and could run their offense through him for easy scores in the halfcourt set.
Hi. I guess I won't bother adding to the worried voices, because you all are saying what I would have said. What I'll say is that I listened to the Lakers game on the radio, but turned it off in disgust by the middle of the fourth. Prepare for a rant approaching the psychotic!
It wasn't just a loss, it was a loss to the Lakers. A lot of us hate the "Sp*urs" because of Robert Horry, but I don't have enough NBA hate left for them; I burn it all on the Lakers, on their nauseating arrogance and their implicit glorification of crude and shallow Hollywood glamor. Back during the Jason Kidd era and the Stephon Marbury interlude, I was so discouraged by the Lakers winning championships--year after year of ultimate victory for the bad guys--that I almost gave up following the NBA. I also dislike their playing style. So what if the triangle offense is the most efficient?--it's so boring that it makes the Spurs fun to watch. But what can you expect but boredom from an offense that mocks basketball by not scoring much, by not using a dedicated point guard, and by surrounding one or two stars with players anonymous and dispensable even by role player standards? Even their fans--not just the Hollywood trash, but the human beings--sometimes annoy me, because though I didn't get hooked on the NBA until 1993, I know that in the 80s, most people loved the glitzy Showtime Lakers rather than the storied but blue-collar Celtics. Shame on them, and no wonder I'm pleased that the Celtics are a great team again. (Here's hoping the Suns can meet and beat them in the 2008 Finals.)
I don't dislike Kobe Bryant as much as I used to, because considering that his rape trial and his trade demands have sunk him into ridiculousness, I am tempted to pity him. I've seen him called "the NBA's biggest asshole," but it's really not him, it's Phil Jackson. That gargoyle-faced taunting sleazebag never won an NBA championship without parasiting on a team already near a championship by sheer star power--Jordan, Pippen, O'Neal, Bryant. I thought "surprise, surprise" when Rudy Tomjanovich gave up on a brief attempt to replace Jackson. to the decent fellow whose life story I read in John Feinstein's book on The Punch, the Lakers were probably even more "uncoachable" than Jackson thought the first time he left them.
What's my most treasured moment or series as a roughly fifteen-year viewer of Suns basketball? Charles Barkley's shot over David Robinson in the 1993 semifinals? The triple-overtime game against the Bulls? Kevin Johnson's angry dunk over Hakeem Olajuwon in 1995? "The Shot" by Rex Chapman? No, none of those. It was the first round last summer, when the Suns came back to beat the Lakers--without Amare Stoudemire. For one of the games--I think it was Game 5--I gleefully stayed up half the night in a motel room watching it, audio muted (family members were trying to sleep) when I needed to be up at five A.M. When the Suns defeated the Lakers again in round one last summer, I was paying much less attention, partly because it was relatively easy and partly because I was still dazed by what the Spurs did to the Suns in 2005. But recently...I hold the Lakers in the same esteem as insects, but unlike other bugs that get stepped on, the Lakers have come back to life. That's why I was so mad about last night's game.
And I had one of the same ideas Bigdawg had: get Brad Miller from the Kings, probably for Boris Diaw. I just don't think the Kings would bite, because how often does a team trade a good center?
The player I'd love to have is really Marcus Camby, because he runs the floor and is a great defender, but I don't suppose Denver would trade him in a million years, for the same reason--he's too good.
You want a bench that gets used? The easiest way is to put Hill onto the bench, move Stoudemire to forward where he belongs, and start Brian Skinner. Bench or not, Hill would still play.
Interesting ideas here. They are not going to blow this thing up any time before the 2008 draft. I don't think it's a matter of their style not winning in the playoffs, in that case the Spurs style fails every year AFTER they win a title. The question is- can this roster win a title, hell can they even win the division?
The team has two glaring weakenesses: 1. interior defense and 2. A weak bench
Decent bigs are hard to find in the NBA and while giving Skinner more minutes might provide some better defense, he's a not a starter. Bringing Grant Hill off the bench doesn't work because he needs minutes with Nash and he's a good wing defender. Moving Marion to the wing negates his athletic advantage.
Brad MIller is done and he can't guard anyone anyway. The team needs a garbage man- a David Lee/Paul Millsap type. Hell even Ruben Patterson would kinda help... just don't let your daughters babysit for him.
At the very least, a backup point like a HEALTHY Luke Ridnour or Damon Stoudemire would lessen the dropoff when Nash takes a seat. The three-point shooting hasn't been as good this year with Raja missing time and LB and Marion struggling from distance. Another shooter would be nice too.
So many of us wanted the Garnett trade to happen and it sucks now that we see the impact he's having in Boston. He's changed the culture of the team. Nash has made this team a lot better but they need more versatility to compete with different styles of the best in the West.
Just wondering: would the Sixers perhaps be willing to part with Sammy Dalembert for... gasp... Shawn Marion? They're rebuilding and Marion is probably going to opt out after the season anyway. Dalembert is a defender and runs the floor reasonably well, and with Hill playing like he does, the Suns conceivably could afford to lose Marion.
What do you guys think?
I have another idea. What if the Suns could get Tyson Chandler for anyone except Stoudemire, Nash or Bell? (I was going to say Barbosa, but as Hersey said, he's struggling, so I don't know.) I'm really thinking Boris Diaw, because his salary is relatively similar. And the Atlanta draft pick if the Hornets wanted it. I know Tyson Chandler can't shoot--I don't know why else the Bulls dumped him--but he runs the floor and plays defense.
And since we agree that the Suns need another shooter...I know he plays no defense, but what about Gordan Giricek, whom the Suns looked at already?
Oh, my. I didn't realize during the game just how much Andrew Bynum humiliated Amare Stoudemire. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AvDd6FoXgbHqq2RPAX81iCK8vLYF?slug=lakersbynumontheriseandi&prov=tsn&type=lgns
The columnist here asked several NBA sources if they would trade Stoudemire for Bynum, and every one of them said no way. If the Suns are fading, Stoudemire's fading with them.
Get used to it. You're all realizing a hard reality. The window that was barely open to begin with is now closed. Yes, the Suns are fun to watch. But were they ever really contenders? They have relied on Kurt Thomas and now Brian Skinner to stop big men? Brian Skinner. Is it any wonder that Kerr needs to shed payroll. It is the realization that this team cannot win it all. So why tie that albatross around their neck. They are now 7-7 against the West, and 12-2 against the East. Sure they are beating the weak teams, but they are struggling against the good teams, and the schedules going to get harder. They cannot beat any team with decent bigs, and especially a team that can score AND has decent bigs (Lakers, Spurs). It was fun, but the show's coming to an end.
Were the Suns ever really contenders? Let's see... three years ago, they lost to the Spurs when JJ got hurt. Two years ago, they lost to the Mavs when Raja got hurt. One year ago they lost to the Spurs again when... we all know what happened.
Yes, the Suns have not been deep enough to deal with such adversities, I grant you that. But had they been lucky at least once in those three tries, they probably would have won it all, despite the lack of depth. There were teams in the past that were that lucky, it just didn't happen to the Suns.
But I'm afraid I'm more optimistic about the past that about the present and near future...
Hanks,
Luck? Luck doesn;t win Championships. Those injuries didn't cost the Suns the series, and frankly, complaining about those suspensions is mere whining. Shoulda , Coulda, Woulda...The Spurs beat the Suns in 3 other games with no one suspended. So why is is such a big issue? this is a team that has never made a Finals, so what history is there to back up these shoulda could wouldas? absolutely nothing. Being lucky doesn't win Championships. Being the best team does. Seven games is what you get. Luck applies in the NCAA, where it's one and done. Not over 7 games. They came back in 05-06 to beat the Lakers. Without Raja for game 6, and if luck applies, then it was lucky for the Suns that Lamar Odom didn't foul Shawn marion after his rebound to prevent a possible 3 attempt. That's the way the cookie has crumbled. It's now crumbled with season ending losses for 3 years running now. This is therit team, this is their style. they are competitive, yes, but lack the necassary parts to FINISH the job. The core remains, but the help is worse than the past 3 years. So, if they couldn't do it before, how could they do it now.
The ceiling for the Suns this year is much lower than in years past. Our record is deceptive and other teams are surging to take their place. I just don't know how competitive they can be in a 7 game series with SA, LA, GS, UT, Detroit, or Boston. They would probably fare well against Dallas, but that's about it. The game against the Clips aside, our interior defense just blows.
They just arent't the same team they've been the past couple of seasons. The Lakers & NO have closed the gap to only one game, and we may not win the division if things keep going like this. Lets hope for an easy opponent in the first round, but I'm not optimistic.
I just don't see us getting out of the first round this year.
Darkseeker,
While I agree that luck doesn't win chamionships, I do think it helps quite a bit. I'm no statistician, but if you look at the last, say, fifteen championship teams, you'll probably find that their starters tended to make it through without significant injuries (or mass suspensions...)
The Spurs did beat the Suns in three games with no one suspended, granted, but the Suns, for their part, beat them in two. So I don't see how you can claim that they _couldn't_.
And that was your original question: contender is by definition one that _could_ win; the one that _did_ win is champion, not contender.
So I still think the Suns demonstrated that they could beat the Spurs, hence, they were contenders. Q.E.D.
Did anyone notice how well the Suns, esp. Stoudemire, played after the Fakers humiliated them? They bullied the Clinkers (though with the injuries, it didn't count) and then played tough to beat them again last night. Let the Suns get dumped down a few playoff spots in the Western Conference, and let's see if being angry helps.
Did anyone catch the Fakers vs Utah game last night?
Holy crap LA smoked them! I pray we don't face the Fakers in the postseason if they keep playing like that. They played Suns ball combined with Spurs defense up until garbage time. They were ahead by some ridiculous amount, like 34 points or something until their bench let utah back into the game.
We did good against a depleted Clips squad, but I just don't know... I think we have to blow up the team this year and start over with a new system that actually plays defense.
Hanks,
You have a point they were "contenders" by definition.
Josh,
It was the Clippers.
I know it was the Clippers. I call them the Clinkers to mock them. Or the Clankers, or the Clunkers. It's part of an entire set of insulting names I have for various teams not lucky enough to have an unmockable name.
-L.A. Fakers/L.A. Losers
-L.A. Clinkers/Clankers/Clunkers
-Golden State Pacifists
-Sacramento Queens
-Utah Spazz
-Houston Rocks
-San Antonio Squirts
-New York Bricks
-Chicago Fools
-Miami Cold
-Cleveland Have-a-Beers

Josh...
I meant, don't get excited about the effort, it was only the Clippers.
Yes, I acknowleged that it didn't count. Still, a 36-point lead against a depleted Clinkers team, with Stoudemire playing well, probably translates to a few points' lead over the Squirts or a somewhat larger lead over the Fakers.
I'm delighted that Amare Stoudemire told the Republic he is actively trying to play better defense and to avoid fouling out. I honestly would rather have him than Charles Barkley, who was arrogant, lazy, seriously undersized, and disdainful of defense. Stoudemire may never be a great defender, but with his work ethic, we can probably be sure he'll improve. --Josh
Has anyone noticed that Shawn Marion's rebounding has disappeared?
Shawn Marion Must Be Laughing NOW!
