Hoops comes into focus
So I've finally gotten out of bed and have begun to cope with my beloved Patriots losing Superbowl 42. For me it's on par with the 1997 Rose Bowl, Game 6 of the 2002 World Series and Game 5 against the Sp*rs last year. When our teams lose it sucks, especially with a title on the line. Sports is the best form of entertainment with real drama rather than scripted twists and turns. When your team loses and the season is over the whole community feels it and you try not to dwell on it until the next season starts.
I mention all this because I haven't been following the Suns as closely as I would like because I've been obsessed with football for obvious reasons. The Suns can however help me move on... to more heartache. This season is quite possibly a final judgement on this group of Suns players. While my football team's recent success makes it a little easier to handle a playoff loss, my other teams never win. The San Francisco Giants have been the World Series twice in my lifetime and haven't won. The Suns have been to the Finals once and ran into the Jordan buzzsaw. You think 'we were so close we just need to make a move and just grow up a bit and we'll get back.'
Oh if it was only that simple. The chemistry has been iffy this year as Marion, Stoudemire and Nash have taken turns complaining. The front office says they are sticking with this core group and for all intents and purposes, this 2nd half stretch and playoff run could be the last we see of this team as it is.
The country is now turning it's focus to basketball as the NBA starts national coverage and the college hoop drama gets us warmed up for the playoffs. There are good stories. The resurgence in Boston (pray for no playoff upsets- Boston vs Detroit must happen). The surprising rise of the Hornets and Blazers. Then there's the totally unexplainable genius of Mitch Kupchak.
How the f*ck do you trade Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol? Sure the other pieces are nice but that gives the (healthy) Lakers a huge and talented starting lineup- to go with their awesome bench. Before the Bynum injury, I thought the Lakers were better than the Suns. Now the Suns have to fight to win their division. It looks like at least two teams above .500 will MISS the playoffs in the West. Seeding is probably more important than ever and given the few games separating the top teams, a couple bad loses can drop a team from 1st to 6th.
While there a ton of obstacles in the Suns path to the Finals, seeing if this team can break through will be nerve wracking and fun. This team will have to be on the same page because their salaries prevent the team from seriously retooling and require that they simply get better to be an elite team. The way the Suns have played so far, it seems this team has a ceiling. Their lack of consistent defense, height and depth makes it hard to see this team getting any deeper than the previous three years. The West might be the best it's ever been and the Suns will have to show us more if they're gonna win it. We'll been watching living and dying with every play.

Only obstacle is the spurs and Robert Horry's shoulder baby... I just feel a great sense of pleasure when I think of that hit... not because your guys got suspended... that sucked... but the fact that Horry just said "hey, we're gonna lose this game but there is no way you are gonna be more physical than us"... sorry for the bad memories and long message... like the blog.. obvious im a spurs fan... hit me up at fortheloveofsports.blogspot.com ... chuuuch
I can undertand the Suns are loth to break up their core while having the best record in the West. At the same time, though, I don't see how they're hoping to win it all without interior defense. If Bynum was quite enough, what havoc is he going to wreak with Gasol on his side? The Suns need to make a bold, make-or-break move to solidify the middle.
Have fun with Shaq...hahaha
As a Lakers fan, I can't help but feel a little sorry for the pathetic suns and their fair-weather fans.
I can't decide what I think about the trade (provided, of course, that it does happen). I certainly got my wish: the Suns do solidify the middle and certainly do it by the make-or-break move I called for.
That said, it's a huge risk and it remains to be seen if Shaq can play/run with the Suns. Also, I don't like the way they part with Marion, a couple of weeks after saying there's no way he'll be traded.
OTOH, Banks is a good riddance and Marion, whom I've always liked as a player, would probably bolt in the summer anyway. Has anyone noticed that Marion has a scoring average less than two points higher than Shaq, and that with Nash?
In general, this just might work. More probably it won't. But it's worth the try, because by staying put the Suns wouldn't win anything.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO dissapointed with the Shaq trade. Don't see us making it far in the playoffs. Don't see us making the playoffs next year.
Nobody realised how good Marion was cause he didn't have flashy moves. I think he covered up a lot of weaknesses on the team that will now be exposed.
Hey! As of now (1:48 PM on February 6th), this stupid Shaq trade isn't done, according to Yahoo Sports and Hoopshype. There is still hope that it won't happen. (The Suns should simply have traded Boris Diaw and someone else to Philadephia for Samuel Dalembert.) It could still be a big hoax.
Hersey, I don't like the Sp*rs either, but with all due respect, the Fakers deserve to be hated much more. With a few exceptions last summer, the guttersnipes who taunt this blog don't come from San Antonio. The Suns will probably meet the Fakers in the playoffs for the third straight year, and must put them down again, with or without O'Neal, for the good of the human race. It's more important than the championship itself. Death to the Fakers! Death! Death! DEATH!!! Or do I need to post my anti-Lakers Manifesto again?
The Shaq deal caught me off guard too. I'll write something later once we know it's legit.
Trust me I hate the Lakers more than the Sp*rs. They've tormented us for far longer. But I live in Texas surrounded by Spurs fans.
The following blog posted the Top 10 reasons for why the Suns traded for Shaq

One word explains the trade for Snack O'Neal..
Desperation
Marion is one, if not the, more overrated players in the league.
But I'd still take him over a washed up, broken down Snack. Not to mention, he is their best defender on a team with zero defense...by far
Strictly a cap move, but still a steal for Miami.
I'm glad you're back and I'm sorry about the Patriots (I was rooting for them too), but what I really want to know is what you think about this Shaq trade b/c I can't see a positive spin except that Shawn would have left soon anyway but most anyone besides Shaq would have been better. I just don't see how he'll fit in and wonder if you see a way this could possibly work.
thanks for giving the lakers the pacific division.
I think the word that explains the trade for Shaq is courage. Or perhaps realism, as the Suns finally realized they weren't going anywhere by staying put.
Incidentally, has anyone noticed that the 20 million Shaq gets for a season is exactly what Marion reportedly asked for? So the Suns saved whatever Banks was going to get.
Do we still call Sarver cheap?
I am thinking about gambles, since this trade was the biggest gamble in the history of the Phoenix Suns. Here's another gamble.
The Suns could add depth on wing defense by signing Ruben Patterson as that thirteenth player they must have. He’s known for being a stupid thug, but he can defend multiple positions. If you combined Shawn Marion (forward who defends multiple positions), Raja Bell (defensive tenacity) and Ron Artest (stupidity and possible mental problems), and add crime and public menace, you’d have Patterson. He could spell Raja Bell in guarding Ginobili and Bryant, if he'd cooperate long enough. If he did anything to embarrass the Suns off-court, they could waive him. --Josh
