Horny

What if Jeff Hornacek became the new coach of the Suns... with a staff of specialists... 3 HOF caliber veterans, an MVP candidate and hungry young players who don't defend... and the elite medical staff. He'd be scrutinized but hey he might be able to inspire some decent clutch performances. I like Kerr's chances with a coach he picked. We've listened to Steve Kerr's ideas on winning and execution on TV for years. I like Horny's chances with a staff of excellent specialists.

As for 7 Seconds or Less in New York... the Knicks will be the first team to use roller skates.

I think this team would be very successful as a roided-clone of the 1996-98 Utah Jazz. They need to force Amare to emulate Karl Malone rather than Penny Hardaway. Nash can dish in a medium pace game or bang with the bench if they'll all burners... The bench is supposed to stretch a lead... As long as the bench players can play with confidence and speed... The starters can grind it out.

The 15 pick should be a decent player... who can develop as an understudy to Grant Hill as a rookie. Learn how to lead from Shaq... How to practice from Nash... The desire to dominate from Amare... How to play dirty from Raja.

I think Kerr has a chance to really develop a basketball program in Phoenix. One that can produce a title with a perfect supporting cast for a spoiled star. He's won with Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan... He's seen the best and worst of it... For now I'm going keep the faith and see how the hire, the draft, trades and free agency go.

Perhaps it's time to care about the team more than ever. Perhaps it's time to win without a gimmick... To just beat people with skill, preparation and ferocity.

Zei, Jeff Hornacek is my all-time favorite Sun, but he has no head coaching experience; and would he stress defense?

I've been thinking about the same thing you're thinking regarding Amare Stoudemire: he doesn't bang in the paint as much as he should. --Josh

Good thoughts Hersey. I especially like your last paragraph: "Perhaps it's time to care about the team more than ever. Perhaps it's time to win without a gimmick... To just beat people with skill, preparation and ferocity."

The last several years have been a blast to watch, but I always felt like there was a fatal flaw. And my fears proved to be accurate. So now, more than ever, I think we all need to give Steve Kerr a shot to make this happen. I think it's going to get worse before it gets better, but give him a chance. That likely means waiting until 2010 to see what he can assemble once he has some cap flexibility. And all the while, we need to support the team like never before.

Regarding the coach - I'm not so high on hiring a coach with little coaching experience (Hornacek, EJ, Majerle). That feels like too much of a risk. I would prefer Kerr finds someone with experience and knowledge of what it takes to win a championship. I have faith that Kerr will be able to find that.

So far Hornacek's coaching experience is primarily as a part-time shooting coaching for the Jazz. They brought him in to work with AK47 on shooting and probably getting along with Jerry Sloan.

Kurt Rambis is probably a sleeper but he fits the bill as a champion as a player and assistant coach.

I personally think one of the former Suns (Horny, EJ, Majerle) should mos def be on the new staff. The Suns have consistently kept good guys around the club and have promoted from within. While the head coach may come from elsewhere, these guys should get a shot to develop as coaches with this veteran team.

Kerr has reportedly contacted Paul Silas, most likely to focus on Amare Stoudemire. Amare will probably never bulk up because of his knees but he has to get tougher and nastier on defense.

I don't think the team has to rush to rebuild. The expiration of Nash and Shaq's contracts will provide the cash to be ballers in free agency but the core is still good enough to put a very solid team on the floor. Plus, one trade can dramatically change a team. Kerr needs to improve our suspect offseasons. All the little moves have killed this team for three years. Even with the big free agent market in 2010 looming, two seasons is a long time to take for granted, especially in the Western Conference.

I don't want the team to throw away the next two years in order to position themselves for 2010. But I think Nash, Shaq, and Hill will decline more than Amare, Barbosa, and Diaw will improve. And there's no cap room at all to improve the team through free agency. So that means the next couple of years will not be as good as the last couple of years.

That's why I'm adamant about not picking up Nash's option if, and only if, that money can be used to sign a player who will start making the team better. I'm not saying that will be easy to do, but Kerr must consider it if the opportunity presents itself.

As for the coaches you named, I like the Kurt Rambis suggestion. And I'm totally on board with bringing in Hornacek, EJ, and/or Majerle as an assistant. I would also love to see Alvin Gentry stick around, but it sounds like that's not going to happen.

Josh: That was Hersey's post, not mine. ;)

I'm more of a fan of bringing in Thibodeau. I think that the players know the offense just fine and Thibodeau is just the kind of guy to fix our defense. There are plenty of candidates ,(Marc Jackson, Thibodeau and Avery Johnson are probably at the top of the list, though there hasn't been any interest shown in Avery and vice versa) and plenty of people close to the organization who want a try at being an assistant (Both of our color commentators coming to mind, I imagine both would do fine as assistants but neither have any business coaching at this point in time), as well as some outside shots from experienced coaches that have been mentioned (Paul Silas comes to mind).

All in all, our options are open and I trust Kerr to make the right move until he proves to me that he doesn't know what he's doing. I'm rooting for Thibodeau though.

Thibodeau will get a look no doubt but not until Boston's season is done, which can only help his case. He's a career assistant (so far) who specializes in defense and player development.

The tough thing about 1st time guys is having no idea how they react under pressure. To some extent you can't help but feel that Popovich can take over a game with a solid strategy. I want a guy who'll win us a few games with smart moves. That's being greedy though.

Ahem. My apologies, Hersey. Maybe I was looking at an old blog by Zei.

There is a coach whom I know is a good strategist and would like to see interviewed: Paul Westphal. With Avery Johnson fired, maybe Westphal is available. I have no idea if he coaches good defense. But he could write up good plays, whether or not, back in that Portland game in 1992, it was his idea to inbound the ball straight off the backboard for a buzzer-beater. And he believes in a bench; hell, he even started Jerrod Mustaf a few times. --Josh

Do you know where I can find a video of that Josh? (Tried Youtube)

Awesome. My comments follow the viagra ads. So. Cool.

"Perhaps it's time to win without a gimmick... To just beat people with skill, preparation and ferocity."

I find your lack of faith (in the 7 seconds or less strategy) disturbing.

I for one drank the cool-aid and embraced the up tempo game with the passion of true faith. The Suns had the perfect lineup (more or less) it. And they had Nash.

So what happens? A series of ref bad calls. A couple of fluke opponent buzzer beaters. a few devastating injuries (consider how far they went without Amare). And the inevitable run in with Texas.

So this incarnation isn't meant to be. So be it. Nash is still Nash, but the rest (starting with Shaq) can be moved around as necessary IMO to do what it takes to bring the magic back.

Please, please, bring back the 7 seconds or less offense!

The Rams went to two Superbowls (winning one) on the basis of an inhuman offense (they even made me like Kurt Warner - the most intrinsically loathsome quarterback ever. The Oilers won a handful of Stanley Cups parlaying a tempo and offensive style that dared opponents to keep up with them (and even we Calgarians could appreciate the genius of Paul Coffey) etc.

Defense wins championships, but also yawns, while offense is nice, and puts fans in the seats. Does anybody but SA fans really enjoy watching them play? I've switched to darts (180!) rather then watch Duncan and Co. grind out their half court offense like my one year old working on his mashed peas.

But the Suns, the Suns made me see the light! They made the game like it was in the 80s, with Magic, and high octane Nugget teams. Worth watching.

But more than that is the recognition that the opposite path, the dark path, the path of the Pistons and the Spurs, is wrong. Whats more there is a deeper wisdom, even if you go that path, you are already behind everyone else. Anything resembling a Duncan (Oden) is unavailable. Cloning is not yet legal. Neither is exchanging Shaq via time-travel with his early Lakers form.

The Dark path no matter how tempting, can only lead to destruction.

There is only one way out. 7 seconds or less.

7 seconds or less. You just gotta have faith baby!

Stay righteous.

The Suns used 7 seconds or less to get their fanbase back. They gave away Marbury and waited for free agency. It was kind in the form of Nash and Q Rich. The core of the 04-05 team was so young when D'Antoni got Nash. Nash was the only regular on that team over 30 before Jimmy Jackson's I refuse to play for New Orleans stance got him traded to Phoenix. They were a marvel in that they took the league by storm. (I watched them play in person during their hot streak.) They were impressive and Nash was amazing. They had us believing a title was near. But...

Their inability to get stops killed them year after year. We saw that clunky Dallas team get to the Finals just by revamping their defense with a potent offensive group. They could win both ways. And they were deep...

None of these Suns teams has had any depth because D'Antoni didn't use his bench. The core of this team aged exponentially over the last 3 years because he wore his starters out. Starters left from 04-05: 2. The best teams always have a player that is unstoppable and decent defense. The Suns developed neither because they couldn't stop anybody. I loved these teams but their flaws were obvious to us the whole time.

How is it that the so-called offense that everyone wanted to play in had such a difficult time keeping and attracting free agents? Chemistry my friends. D'Antoni's team had chemistry issues. Each year it was a different drama. Joe Johnson's contract. The Fitness Club. Marion's fragile Ego. Amare's inflated Ego. Preferential treatment of Nash. D'Antoni losing the team after the 2 OT loss against the Spurs. (I was there and it was heartbreaking) Let's not forget that Greg Popovich made D'Antoni's team look bad every year they've played. 4-1, 4-2 with 2 stars getting suspended, 4-1. The Spurs exploited EVERY weakness this team had and exposed D'Antoni as the real reason this team can't beat San Antonio. D'Antoni didn't run a tight ship and he lost the team.

Sure the offense works. The last few years have been great to be a Suns fan but defense is too important in the NBA. The defensive schemes used by Boston and Detroit are impressive. Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace do some amazing things on the defensive end of court. Amare is too good to not have that in his game.

Friends, I would like to say that Amare Stoudemire's position on the team should not be secure. He's had years to learn to play defense, and hasn't gotten it. I could see trading him for other young players who defend and play hard (not that he doesn't play hard). The '05-'06 season, where the team made it back to the WCF without him, in which Boris Diaw (in his only good season) filled in for him like gangbusters, made Stoudemire look superfluous.

I also want to say, in light of Antonio McDyess's performance recently for the Pistons, that letting him leave the Suns so easily in '04 was a mistake. I have read that he begged anyway to be cut, but the team should have tried him to change his mind.
