Summer Fun

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Hope you're enjoying your summer as much as I am. Here's a few thoughts...

I love the Matt Barnes signing. I was hoping the team would nab him last year but Grant Hill came to town instead. Now we have both, Bonus. So looking at the team now, we are at least 10 deep if at least one sophomore (Strawberry/Tucker) gets some burn. Jalen Rose is rolling over in his grave.

I think it's awesome NBA teams are losing rotation players to Europe. I also think it is awesome Brandon Jennings ditched the UofA to get paid in Italy and control his career. I am also looking forward to the Olympics. I know I'm not the only person excited to see Ricky Rubio play for the Spanish national team. I think going to Europe and watching the Euro Cup got me hyped for the international game. Either that or I'm having hoops withdrawal and watching LeBron and the Boyz get a gold medal is the cure.

I'm obliged to link to this video making it around the web. Steve Nash doing the robot = Best.Moment.Ever.

I'd like to mention a headline I just saw, claiming that LeBron James would go to Europe if a team paid him at least $50 million a year. That is one of the most offensive things I've ever heard a professional athlete say. Until LeBron James appeared, I never supposed I'd see a player more disgustingly commercialized and money-driven than Michael Jordan. I don't care how damn good James might be; no athlete is worth $50 million a year. Hyped before he even entered the NBA; widely believed to be planning to dump the Cavs for more money and a bigger stage; and now thinking he could deserve $50 million a year:James has earned a place somewhere on my list of the lowest forms of life in the sports world.

(Other occupants are Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, Michael Jordan, Latrell Sprewell, Glenn Robinson, Vernon Maxwell, Cedric Maxwell, probably Tim Hardaway, and possibly Carmelo Anthony. Reasons:
-Kobe Bryant: Egotistical and self-centered.
-Phil Jackson: Gargoyle-faced taunting sleazebag.
-Michael Jordan: Most commercialized athlete in history. I believe he would have dribbled a bag of money if allowed to.
-Glenn Robinson: Demanded $100 million before he'd ever played an NBA game.
-Vernon Maxwell: Didn't take care of his kid and the kid's mother. The woman called him a poor excuse for a human being.
-Cedric Maxwell: Claimed women should stay in the kitchen.
-Tim Hardaway: Gay-basher.
-Carmelo Anthony: displayed cowardice during an on-court fight.)

Cedric Maxwell reportedly drove around construction sites in fancy cars and reminded workers he had nothing to do that day.

There's not a person on the planet who would turn down big money to do what they're best at. I do hope the Suns are ready to hand over a max contract to Lebron in 2010. I wouldn't take the $50 million rumors too seriously. I think the whole thing was a joke anyways.

That's too bad, because max-contract players weaken their teams by eating the salary-cap space that could give them better teammates. Now that the most anti-depth coach in recent memory, Mike D'Antoni, is gone, it's hard for the Suns to buy more depth because almost all their money is tied up. It's sad that the only way to have a deep team is either to have unlimited money (i.e., the Dolans) or to use many non-American players (i.e., the Spurs).

I think depth is a matter a shrewd player moves. The Suns will pay the luxury tax but will be potentially 10-11 deep and I fully expect vets to sit out 5-10 games, which will help develop the young players. The change in the NBA economy is making max contracts rarer and the guys who deserve those contracts will draw good free agents to your team, ie KG with the Boston Celtics.

I expect the Suns to fiscally become a bit more like the Spurs as Kerr's regime continues. He's made reference to a pecking order several times and contracts are part of that. The core leaders of a team should earn the most and role players should have flexible, fair deals. Having gone through 3 general managers in the last 3 years, I just want to see a consistent approach to putting a competitive team on the floor.
