Dragic to join Suns this season

Some breaking news on a Sunday afternoon. Suns second round pick Goran Dragic will join the team this season after reaching a buyout agreement with his Spanish team Tau Ceramica.

Dragic will be tossed into the fire as Nash's backup this season. Much like Robin Lopez getting to learn the ropes from former MVP Shaquille O'Neal, Dragic will learn how to run the team from 2-time MVP Nash. This team has an interesting dynamic. O'Neal, Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Grant Hill are veteran stars. Matt Barnes and Raja Bell will battle with the West's glamourous scorers. Leandro Barbosa and Boris Diaw need to prove their value after Mike D'Antoni's departure and a summer of trade rumors. Sophomores Alando Tucker and DJ Strawberry will have an opportunity to earn minutes. Rookies Lopez and Dragic will be counted on to play significant roles, especially with Nash and Shaq expected to sit games in preparation for the playoffs. Big man Louis Amundson might not be more than a practice player but he's a defensive energy big- which further adds to the attitude makeover of this team.

Overall, I think the summer has been pretty successful. The team is deeper and EVERY player the team drafted and signed is known for defense. Good job Steve Kerr. Can't wait for training camp.

When did the Suns sign Louis Amundson?? I read all the Suns-related sports articles I can find, and I didn't know about this.

Well, whether he plays or not, Amundson and Robin Lopez being here probably means that Sean Marks won't return. Too bad.

I still say keep Eric Piatkowski, to compensate for the alleged need for shooters. --Josh

I actually don't think the Suns will sign any more players, because they are over the cap, but if they don't re-sign Eric Piatkowski, Derek Anderson sounds like a good pickup.--Josh

yesterday marks another questionable move by the suns...Dj Strawberry has shown so much promise and here we are handing him away for nothing...for a third string point guard who probably wouldnt have even made the team two years ago

I strongly suspect that it was strictly a money-saving move, made possible by Strawberry's desire for more minutes. I expect Singletary to be waived unless something goes wrong with Goran Dragic. The Suns don't need Singletary. --Josh

Josh, I don't really think so.

The Suns need a 13th player and won't get one cheaper than Singletary.

And even should they be able to sign a vet big man, for that kind of money Singletary still makes sense as an insurance in case Dragic proves somewhat less brilliant that hyped. Which he almost certainly will, he's a Euro rookie and is bound to struggle at some point. Singletary looks like he could run the team some if something bad happens.

At least for this season, I say he's a keeper.

We'll have to have a friendly disagreement. The Suns were deeper than they looked at backup point guard. Besides Dragic, Barbosa, Diaw and Grant Hill can play it in a pinch (if coach Porter is more flexible than Mike D'umbtoni). I think what we need is a shooting guard--someone who can shoot but is taller than Barbosa. All the more reason to lament the Strawberry trade--that shooting guard could have been him.

I guess we will...

I don't really think a third shooting guard could get much time behind Bell and Barbosa... and Strawberry wasn't that much of a shooter, anyway. I guess I see Tucker eventually sliding towards the third-string SG.

I agree that Hill, Diaw and perhaps Barbosa have some decent ball-handling skills, which will help whichever rookie subs for Nash, but that's not quite the same thing as playing the point. (Remember the Hawks expecting Joe Johnson to play the point guard for them?)

The way they talk, the Suns plan on not just surviving without Nash for a few minutes here and there, but actually playing without him this year. And for that, you really need more that what you can get "at a pinch".

I agree that the summer has been fun. The questions remains; Was it enough to put the Suns over the top, or will they be a good playoff team that will go down in rounnd one or round two?
